TORCHWOOD = My New Obsession

January 24th, 2007 (04:54 am)
giddy

Location: bed
Mood: giddy

For the past few weeks I have been bathing in the aftermath of a glorious event. An event which has become my latest obsession for I think about it all the time and ponder its magnificence endlessly. That event my friends is Torchwood. What is Torchwood you ask? Well, in short it is pure bliss in the form of a British television show spun off from the famous and brilliant new Doctor Who series.

It all started with a man named Captain Jack Harkness. A former Time Agent serving in the American Army during WW2 who crossed paths with The Doctor and Rose. Fighting alongside The Doctor and his new companion, Captain Jack he died trying to defeat an army of Daleks but instead found extermination on the Game Station. However, when Rose absorbed the power of the time vortex she brought him back to life. Unknowingly, he was left behind by The Doctor and Rose.

But somehow he ended up in Cardiff working for the Torchwood Institute where he and his team investigate extraterrestrial incidents on Earth and scavenges alien technology for its own use.

Why am I obsessed you might ask? Well, there are many reasons. First the creator of the show has said that he was heavily influenced by the American television shows Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel and wanted to bring something like it to British tv. And in truth the show is like a love letter to both Buffy and Angel in its tone, wit and sci-fi-fantasy. And we all know that I LOVE sci-fi/fantasy. The writing is superb and the stroylines extremely engaging and sometimes heart wrenching. But most of all...it is the first show to have a bisexual lead character. Not only that, the other series regulars are also considered bi. And the way it is worked into the show is brilliant and amazing without being exploitative. I can't even begin to say how wonderful this makes me feel. Although...

I'm so obsessed that I ordered the first volume of the show from the UK (Amazon.co.uk) which has the first five episodes on it knowing that I would want more. I then searched eBay and found somebody selling the entire season on DVDs they made from recording the show and burning it onto disk. And while I waited for that to arrive in the mail, I decided to learn about torrents and download the episodes myself just in case. Which I did and put on my PMP, which I can now carry with me when I want. And after I had watched the entire season and some of my favorite episodes again, I wanted more. So I went back to Amazon.co.uk and ordered the novel tie-ins and had them shipped ASAP. Then I started making LJ Icons and then I changed the layout of my Journal (which you should all check out) to bask in the light of my new lover. That wasn't enough so I went on eBay and found some Torchwood posters, also from the UK and a Captain Jack action figure which are now wonderfully displayed on my bedroom walls.

Obsessed, yes. Crazy, maybe. Psycho-Fanboy-SciFiGeek, most defiantly.

Mood: moody

If you love "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and/or "Angel" and are not watching "Veronica Mars" on UPN then you should stop right now, put down your mock Mr. Pointy and relinquish all your Buffy DVDs and memorabilia. Now smack yourself in the head for not witnessing the second coming of the Slayer.

Okay, well maybe I'm being a little dramatic but seriously you need to be watching "Veronica Mars" on UPN Wednesdays at 9pm. The first season comes out on DVD October 11. Even Joss Whendon loves the show and will even guest star in an episode. Read the article here.

Goodbye Queer As Folk

sad

Mood: sad

Tonight was the very last episode of "Queer As Folk". Words cannot express how sad I am to see this show end. I have watched it from the beginning when it aired in December 1999. I made my mom get Showtime just so I could see it. I was a huge fan of the British version but the American one was ten times better.

I'll miss Sunday nights and getting tapes during the summer at Hollins of the episodes she taped for me.
